Pop

Pop (DD Jones)

My brothers both were gone,
both were heavy in the streets.
So nobody was at home,
it was just momma and me.
Then she said, "I've got a friend,
that I'd love for you to meet."
I was happy she was happy
but it was rumored in the streets
He was using... cocaine.

My momma had enough,
she said, "now you've got to stop.
'Cause I have a younger son,
and he's calling you his pop.
Want you come with me to church,
maybe they can show the way."
At that time he wasn't ready,
but still every night she prayed
for him to stop... cocaine.

One day he called me son,
he said, "I know you ain't mine,
but I only call you sun,
'cause I know you're gonna shine."
Then one night he went to church,
as the congregation prayed,
and he gave it all to God,
and completely walked away
from... cocaine

(Almost 20 years sober today. No rehab. Just a praying wife and family that believed)

Now let's talk about,
how much I respect my pop.
He been through so much in life,
we ain't never have a lot,
We just had each other's back,
that was really all we need.
Pop, I love you unconditional,
and thanks for loving me,
more than... cocaine.

I know now you were smoking your pain.

  1. This poem is one of the most important to me. Because it is so dear to my heart. My entire neighborhood was filled with drugs and crime when I was growing up. It was unavoidable. But there is something so very special about the ones of us that were able to pull it together and grow from that situation. And there's a love ALL of us have even for the ones that still are there. Those are more than addicts, alcoholics, and dealers. To most of us... they are just... family. And we pray everyday to see them get through.

Let me know what you think. As always, thank you for taking the time to read my writings.

  2. So glad you got back to your 1st love and allowed the words to pour from your inner soul. A lot of people especially men need to hear and see this! Proud of the man/husband/and father you've become! I love you!!

  3. Stephen, you have reach a milestone in your life that is most worthy to us. I understand and I’ve seen what you have seen, if not more. I remember the boy that was joyous over what he had and never fretted over the the small things. You are a star in our eyes today and evermore ol’ friend.

  9. Stephen,
You seem to be pouring out your heart and I'm sure this poem is as much a tribute to your Pop as it is to everyone who overcame the same struggle. ❤

  10. God has blessed you with a tremendous gift with words. You take letters and make words that's transfixing. When I read your work. I not only enjoy I truly feel the words the message the your telling your readers. You allow us to feel what you've been through where you've been and how God brought you through it.

You are an amazing person and that's why your writings are so captivating. You tell truths... not stories. God Bless.

  12. I always love when you can feel someone's heart just by reading their words. No exaggerated expression, no inflection, just black and white with their heart in plain sight. Not only did I feel your heart, I felt your mom's too.

Thankfully you have another woman who still prays for you.
